![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Gamelan is known in all part of Indonesia particularly southern Sumatra to Sulawesi, Kalimantan to Bali.Ī set of Gamelan is a whole entity, one cannot play instruments of different sets together (because of tuning variations) and one cannot simply play one instrument and get a sense of Javanese gamelan music. There are also the bonang (barung & panerus), family of horizontally placed kettle-like gongs, which gave out a wonderful music when knocked with the ‘knocker’. drums also known as kendhang (ageng, wayangan, ciblon, ketipung), celempung(zither), Saron (demung, barung, peking), gongs, tabla, bamboo flutes and often a few other instruments. It comes in various types, shapes and sizes. A typical ensemble also has drums, wooden bar percussion instruments, plucked string instruments, bowed string instruments. ![]() Gamelan are musical instruments made of brass, iron, or bronze (bronze instruments generally have the best sound). Javanese gamelan does not stress virtuosic displays of musical talent. So, what actually is Gamelan? Gamelan music is a communal art form playing the music requires a strong sense of rhythm and attention to the music of the whole group. Without Gamelan, Kuda Kepang cannot function and won't be complete. Due the cost of these tiles, one has to be of an influential family background or a successful merchant to be able to afford them, due to this reason a Melaka staircase is often associated with wealth and status.Gamelan plays an important role in the performance of Kuda Kepang. This has created fusion or cross culture of east meets west local wooden home with three dimensional tiles from China in the east and fancy colourful tiles from Portuguese, Belgium, Netherland and England from the west. As a Malay trading center and the main shipping route for west-east continent hence the ornamentation found in old Melaka house were either imported from eastern or western countries, this can be seen in the tiles decoration. The main commodities traded were spices, rice, cotton textiles silks, ornaments such as porcelain and glass aside from medicinal herbs and forest products. The Portuguese, who were the earliest of the Europeans to set foot in many of these port-towns such as Melaka, Penang, Singapore and such, they were confronted by the Spanish, Dutch, English and French. ![]()
